Review Oral Hygiene Procedures

Review oral hygiene procedures– all periodontal treatment is to return your mouth to a condition that you can keep clean and healthy. Without this, you cannot have a lifelong result.

MAINTENANCE

Periodontal Maintenance is instituted following periodontal therapy. Frequency is dependent on the severity of your disease and how effective your home care is.

The focus of periodontal maintenance is to prevent further disease progression, with particular attention paid to the space between the tooth and the gum, the root of the tooth, and the supporting bone. This is the site where periodontal disease begins and advances. If the disease is controlled in the early phase, this procedure and effective home care will reverse the process.

PERIODONTAL SCALING & ROOT PLANING

Scaling and Root Planing (S&RP) is done with local anesthesia (“Novocaine”) to ensure your comfort during the procedure. No matter how thoroughly this procedure is done (extensive research supports this), it is impossible to eliminate all calculus (tartar) and bacteria from the space between the tooth and the gum when it is 5mms or deeper. The remaining plaque and calculus can be removed if the gum shrinks sufficiently to create a shallow space.

Disinfection - antimicrobials are placed into space immediately after S&RP to eliminate more bacteria left behind in the pocket and soft tissues.

ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT

a) Topical - placed directly into the space between the tooth and the gum after S&RP to eliminate bacteria in the soft tissue and on the root surface

b) Systemic – taken by mouth and enters your bloodstream to further control the infection
